I have always been fascinated with mermaids.

Being Danish, I guess I have Hans Christian Andersen to thank for that.

His story about the Little Mermaid is far from the Disney version though.

His story is grim and bleak and hopeless. 

H.C. Andersen did not have an easy life, and it seems that he found expression and some form of release through his stories.

That is what made his stories so great.

Not the pain of rejection and loneliness that he wrote about in his stories, but the authenticity of his voice.

Being real matters.
